The old name for Yilan County was “Kavalan.” According to archaeological research, Yilan was inhabited by humans thousands of years ago. Before the settlement of the Han people, the Lanyang Plain and surrounding mountains were homelands for the Pingpu and Atayal tribes; later, when the Han people settled in the Lanyang Plain, due to competition for land and resources, the Pingpu tribe was forced to relocate to other areas, or gradually became integrated into Han villages and society. The Atayal tribe was active in the mountainous regions of Nanao and Datong. When the transportation in the Lanyang Plain changed from primarily water transport to railroad transport, while flourishing business districts also relocated from river harbors to railroad stations. The increase in population and development activities have written many stories on this land. For a long time, the Lanyang Plain has born deep cultural sentiments and abundant natural resources. The residents pass these precious treasures down to the generations. Map of Yilan County Farmer and paddy field
